CAT® GAS GENERATOR SETS POWER HIGH ALTITUDE UTILITY IN EXTREME CONDITIONS
Heber Light & Power, a customer-owned utility in Heber City, UT, is a long-time Caterpillar Electric Power customer. Heber uses a variety of Cat® generator sets including two G3516C sets, three G3520C, two G3516A, one G3516H, and one G3520H, with a capacity totaling 13MW. Heber has partnered with Caterpillar and Wheeler Power Systems to test their electric power equipment during field-follow studies before the gensets become available in the marketplace.
Because the industry has shifted toward natural gas gensets, Caterpillar Energy Solutions developed the Cat G3520, the first US EPA certified natural gas generator set at 2 and 2.5 MW power output. It has been operating during Heber’s field-follow study for a year at an altitude of 5,600 feet.
“One of the benefits of testing gas generators at the Heber location is subjecting them to some extreme conditions during the field-follow,” says Shane Minor, utility, governmental, and international sales representative at Wheeler Power Systems. “The units ran at 103° F in the summer and at 10° F in the winter at various humidity levels and the performance has not been impacted.”
Heber Light & Power uses Cat gas generator sets to offset high utility costs, supporting peaking and other strategies to deliver high efficiency, power quality protection, and market price stability. These factors help utilities like Heber Light & Power improve their financial position, differentiate their service, and support community economic growth.
